2027 SSI COLA Increase Amount and Payment Date for Seniors

This is not financial or legal advice. Medicare/Medicaid and benefits rules vary by state and change over time — verify current rules with your state Medicaid office or Area Agency on Aging.

Last verified: July 28, 2026. The 2027 SSI COLA is still projected, not official. Current estimates point to a 3.6% to 3.8% increase. If that range holds, the maximum federal SSI payment would rise by about $36 a month for an individual and about $54 a month for an eligible couple at the low end of the range, based on the 2026 federal SSI amounts of $994 for an individual and $1,491 for a couple.[1][2][3][4]

The first higher SSI payment is expected on December 31, 2026. That is the payment for January 2027. SSI normally pays on the 1st of the month, but January 1 is a federal holiday, so the payment moves to the prior business day.[5][6]

First higher SSI paymentDecember 31, 2026, because January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday

For a person trying to decide whether to hold back money for heat, prescriptions, transportation, or a small home repair, the date matters as much as the percentage. The higher SSI amount is tied to the January 2027 benefit, but the deposit is expected before the calendar turns.

Why the First 2027 SSI Payment Arrives on December 31, 2026

SSI has its own payment rhythm. It is not paid on the Social Security retirement Wednesday schedule that depends on a person’s birth date. SSI is normally paid on the 1st of the month. When the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment is sent on the previous business day.[5]

For the 2027 COLA, that rule is the key. January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday. The prior business day is Thursday, December 31, 2026, so that is when the January SSI payment reflecting the 2027 COLA is expected to arrive.[6]

That early date can be confusing. A December 31 deposit is not an extra December benefit. It is the January 2027 SSI payment arriving early because of the holiday. Anyone using automatic bill pay, cash envelopes, or a family budgeting spreadsheet should label it as January income, even though it lands in December.

Estimated 2027 Federal SSI Amounts at 3.6%, 3.7%, and 3.8%

The official 2027 SSI amount is not set yet. The estimates below apply the projected COLA range to the 2026 maximum federal SSI benefit rates published by the Social Security Administration: $994 for an eligible individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple.[1]

Projected COLAEstimated individual federal SSI maximumEstimated couple federal SSI maximum
3.6%About $1,030/monthAbout $1,545/month
3.7%About $1,031/monthAbout $1,546/month
3.8%About $1,032/monthAbout $1,548/month

In household terms, the difference across the current estimate range is small: roughly $2 a month for an individual and roughly $3 a month for a couple between the 3.6% and 3.8% scenarios. The larger planning point is that the increase looks modest under all three estimates.[1][2][4]

When the Projection Becomes Official

The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official 2027 COLA on October 14, 2026, after the September 2026 CPI-W release.[2] Until then, the 3.6% to 3.8% range should be treated as a planning estimate, not a promised benefit amount.

The projections now being discussed come from forecasters using inflation data available through mid-2026. AARP has pointed to a 3.6% estimate, independent analyst Mary Johnson has been cited at 3.7%, and The Senior Citizens League has shown a 3.8% estimate in its COLA Watch material.[3][4][6]

Those estimates are useful for rough budgeting, but they do not replace the SSA announcement. The final percentage can move if the July, August, or September CPI-W readings change the calculation.

Federal SSI Only: State Supplements May Be Different

The amounts in this article are federal SSI maximums. Some states add a state supplement, and those rules can vary. A person who receives more than the federal amount, or who sees a separate state payment, should check with the state agency that handles SSI supplements, Medicaid, or disability benefits before assuming the full monthly change.

This is also separate from Social Security retirement benefits. Some older adults receive SSI only, some receive Social Security only, and some receive both. The payment date described here is the SSI rule for the January 2027 SSI payment, not the Wednesday retirement-benefit schedule.

What the December 31 Date Means for a Fixed-Income Household

A December 31 SSI deposit may create a small end-of-year opening, but it should be handled carefully. It is January money arriving early. Spending it as if it were extra December money can leave a gap before the February SSI payment.

  • Mark the December 31, 2026 deposit as the January 2027 SSI payment.
  • Wait for the official October 14, 2026 COLA announcement before changing a monthly budget.
  • Use the projected increase as a narrow estimate, not as a cushion for large new expenses.
  • If the household has urgent winter costs, medical copays, transportation needs, or modest safety items such as a grab bar or brighter lighting, put those essentials ahead of optional spending.
  • Check whether any state SSI supplement changes separately from the federal amount.

The expected increase is not large, and the final number is not official yet. The date, though, is planning information worth keeping close: the first SSI payment with the 2027 COLA is expected on December 31, 2026, because the January 1 payment date moves back for the federal holiday.
