Why Your August 2026 SSI Payment Is Early

This is not financial or legal advice. Medicare/Medicaid and benefits rules vary by state and change over time — verify current rules with your state Medicaid office or Area Agency on Aging.

Your August 2026 SSI payment is early because August 1, 2026, falls on a Saturday. Under Social Security Administration rules, when the 1st of the month is a weekend or federal holiday, SSI is paid on the preceding business day. For August 2026, that means the payment date is Friday, July 31, 2026, not Saturday, August 1.[1]
That July 31 deposit is the August SSI benefit. It is not a bonus, not a second July benefit, and not a sign that your eligibility suddenly changed. It simply arrived one business day early.

The Short Answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Why is SSI paid early in August 2026? | Because August 1, 2026, is a Saturday. |
| When will the August 2026 SSI payment arrive? | Friday, July 31, 2026. |
| Will there be a separate SSI deposit in August? | No. The July 31 deposit is the August payment. |
| Is this extra money? | No. It is the regular August benefit paid early. |
| When is the next regular SSI payment after that? | Tuesday, September 1, 2026. |
The part that causes trouble is the bank statement. In July 2026, many SSI recipients will see one SSI deposit on July 1 and another on July 31. That looks like two July payments, but the second one belongs to August. The SSA has explained this same pattern for months when two SSI deposits appear in one calendar month: the later deposit is an early payment for the next month, not extra income.[2]
How the SSA Weekend Rule Applies to August 2026
SSI is normally paid on the 1st of the month. If the 1st falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the SSA pays SSI on the business day before that date.[1]
For August 2026, the calendar lines up this way:
- July 1, 2026: regular July SSI payment.
- July 31, 2026: August SSI payment paid early.
- August 1, 2026: Saturday, so no SSI deposit is made that day.
- August 2026: no separate SSI deposit, because the August benefit already arrived on July 31.
- September 1, 2026: next regular SSI payment date.
Nothing in that sequence means August was skipped. The payment moved; the benefit month did not.
Full 2026 SSI Payment Schedule
The official SSA 2026 payment calendar shows the same rule throughout the year. Most SSI payments land on the 1st. When the 1st is not a business day, the payment moves to the prior business day.[3]
| Benefit month | SSI payment date | Why this date |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 | December 31, 2025 | January 1 is a federal holiday |
| February 2026 | January 30, 2026 | February 1 is a Sunday |
| March 2026 | February 27, 2026 | March 1 is a Sunday |
| April 2026 | April 1, 2026 | Regular 1st-of-month payment |
| May 2026 | May 1, 2026 | Regular 1st-of-month payment |
| June 2026 | June 1, 2026 | Regular 1st-of-month payment |
| July 2026 | July 1, 2026 | Regular 1st-of-month payment |
| August 2026 | July 31, 2026 | August 1 is a Saturday |
| September 2026 | September 1, 2026 | Regular 1st-of-month payment |
| October 2026 | October 1, 2026 | Regular 1st-of-month payment |
| November 2026 | October 30, 2026 | November 1 is a Sunday |
| December 2026 | December 1, 2026 | Regular 1st-of-month payment |
| January 2027 | December 31, 2026 | January 1 is a federal holiday |
August is not the only month in this pattern. The November 2026 SSI payment is scheduled for October 30, 2026, because November 1 is a Sunday. The January 2027 SSI payment is scheduled for December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a federal holiday.[3]
How to Read the Two July Deposits
If you help someone reconcile a checking account, label the July 31 deposit as “August SSI” right away. That one note can prevent the common mistake: treating both July deposits as money available for July bills.
A simple way to handle the month is to budget the July 1 deposit for July expenses and hold the July 31 deposit for August expenses. Rent, utilities, pharmacy copays, groceries, phone bills, and automatic withdrawals may still arrive in August even though the SSI deposit arrived in July.
This matters most for households that run close to zero between checks. An early deposit can make the account look comfortable for a few days, then leave a longer stretch before the September 1 payment. The calendar is correct, but the cash-flow gap can still be real.
A quick bank-statement check
- Mark July 1 as the July SSI payment.
- Mark July 31 as the August SSI payment.
- Do not expect a separate SSI deposit later in August.
- Check any autopay dates that normally pull from the account in early August.
- Plan the next SSI deposit for September 1, 2026.
Does the July 31 Payment Count as August SSI?
Yes. The July 31, 2026, deposit is the August SSI benefit paid early. For SSI planning purposes, it should be treated as August’s payment, not as extra July income. The SSA’s explanation of two SSI payments in one month is built around that point: two deposits can appear in one calendar month because the next month’s payment was moved earlier.[2]
That distinction also matters for SSI resource limits. The point here is narrow but important: the early payment is still the August benefit. If keeping money in the account may put someone near a resource limit, do not assume the extra-looking July deposit is harmless just because it arrived before August. For individualized resource-limit questions, contact SSA or a qualified benefits adviser.
2026 Federal SSI Amounts
The federal SSI payment amounts for 2026 are $994 per month for an eligible individual, $1,491 per month for an eligible couple, and $498 per month for an essential person.[4]
| 2026 federal SSI category | Monthly amount |
|---|---|
| Eligible individual | $994 |
| Eligible couple | $1,491 |
| Essential person | $498 |
Those are federal amounts. Some people receive less because of countable income or living-arrangement rules, and some states add a state supplement. The early August payment date does not, by itself, change the federal SSI amount.
What This Does Not Mean
- It does not mean SSI recipients are getting an extra August payment.
- It does not mean the SSA stopped August SSI.
- It does not mean your payment should arrive on August 3.
- It does not mean retirement, SSDI, or survivor benefits necessarily follow the same date as SSI.
- It does not indicate anything about the 2027 COLA.
For August 2026 SSI, the calendar answer is July 31. August 3 is not the SSI payment date under the SSA rule because the agency pays before the weekend or holiday, not after it.[1]
Bottom Line
SSI is paid early in August 2026 because August 1 is a Saturday. The August benefit is scheduled for Friday, July 31, 2026. There will be two SSI deposits in July, no separate SSI deposit in August, and the next regular SSI payment is September 1, 2026. Nothing extra was awarded; August’s benefit simply arrived on the preceding business day.
