When Will the 2027 Social Security COLA Be Announced?

The 2027 Social Security COLA is most likely to be announced on October 14, 2026, the day September inflation data is expected to be released at 8:30 a.m. ET, with the Social Security Administration expected to confirm the final rate shortly afterward. For seniors and caregivers trying to mark a calendar, that is the working date to watch — but it is still an expected date, not the official benefit increase yet.
SSA’s own cost-of-living page currently says the next COLA will be announced in October 2026, without naming a specific day.[1] AARP and cleveland.com identify October 14, 2026, because that is when the Bureau of Labor Statistics September CPI release is expected, and that September number completes the inflation period used for the COLA calculation.[2][3] The caution matters: the 2025 COLA announcement was delayed from October 15 to October 24 during a government shutdown, so October 14 should be treated as the best current expectation, not a guarantee.[2]
Why the announcement centers on October 14
The COLA is tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W. SSA bases the COLA on the year-over-year change in the average CPI-W for the third quarter — July, August, and September — and the increase becomes effective with January payments.[4]
That is why September matters more than any single summer estimate. July and August can point the calculation in a direction, but September closes the quarter. Once that release is out, the final COLA can be calculated and SSA can announce the official percentage.
Until SSA posts the number, no percentage is official. A projected 3.6%, 3.7%, or 3.8% may be useful for a rough grocery-and-premium budget, but it is not the amount that will appear in a benefit notice.

SSA says COLA notices are available online in the Message Center in late November or early December, and mailed notices go out throughout December.[5] That timing is useful if an adult child is helping a parent review rent, prescription costs, supplemental insurance, or a new Medicare premium.
The January check date is personal. Social Security payments do not all arrive on the same day, and exact January 2027 dates should be checked against SSA’s official payment schedule before anyone builds a cash-flow plan around them. What seniors can safely plan before the official number
