Winter Weather Safety Checklist for a Senior's Home

Start at the thermostat. Before the first real freeze, do not ask whether the house “feels warm enough.” Look at the number. For an older adult’s home, the heat should be set to 68°F or warmer, and indoor cold can become dangerous sooner than many families expect; older adults may be at risk for hypothermia even inside a home kept around 60–65°F. That is the kind of winter safety check that matters: not a general promise to “stay warm,” but a verified condition. Use this winter weather safety checklist for seniors as a pre-freeze walk-through. It sits in fall prevention because icy entries and rushed winter walking are a common way the trouble starts, but the audit is broader than falls. The three failures to catch early are indoor hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, and avoidable slips at entries and walkways.

Zone 1: Heat — verify the number, then the rooms
Set the thermostat to 68°F or warmer. Then walk the rooms where the older adult actually spends time: bedroom, bathroom, favorite chair, kitchen table, and the route between them. A thermostat in the hallway can say one thing while the recliner by the outside wall tells another story. [1]

The irritating part of this check is that “my parent says it’s fine” is not the same as the room being safe. Older adults can lose body heat faster and may not always notice cold stress early. Hypothermia is usually associated with being outside, but health guidance for older adults warns that indoor temperatures in the 60–65°F range can be risky for some people. [2][3]
- Check the thermostat setting: 68°F or warmer.
- Check the bedroom temperature at the time the person usually sleeps, not just at noon.
- Check the bathroom, especially if it has tile, an outside wall, or a draft under the door.
- Check the favorite chair. Look for a cold window, extension cord, throw rug, or space heater crowded against fabric.
- Check that the older adult can reach warm clothing, blankets, charged phone, flashlight, and medication without crossing a dark or cold room.
If cost is the reason the heat is kept low, treat that as a safety problem, not a preference to argue about in the doorway. The fix may involve family help, utility-company hardship programs, or local benefits screening, but the home still needs a plan that keeps the lived-in rooms at a safe temperature.
Space heaters: the 3-foot check
If a space heater is part of the plan, give it 3 feet of clearance from anything that can burn: chair, blanket, newspaper stack, curtain, laundry basket, oxygen tubing, cardboard box, or the edge of a bed. CPSC winter-storm safety guidance uses that 3-foot distance for portable heaters. [4]
Do not stop at the front of the heater. Check behind it and beside it. The cord behind the recliner is exactly the kind of small physical fact that gets missed when everyone is relieved the heater turns on.
- Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet if the manufacturer requires it; do not bury the cord under a rug.
- Place it on a flat, stable surface where a walker, cane, pet, or blanket will not knock it over.
- Make sure it is not the only heat plan for a long outage.
- If the older adult uses oxygen, follow the oxygen supplier’s fire-safety instructions before any heater is used nearby.
Zone 2: Entry and walkways — prevent the short fall, not the long hike
Most families do not need a lecture about mountaineering in winter. They need the side door checked, the first step gritted, and a decision made about who clears the short path to the car, mailbox, trash bins, or ramp.

NCOA fall-prevention guidance for winter emphasizes preparing outdoor surfaces and footwear before ice becomes a crisis. The practical version is simple: traction materials where the door opens, boots that grip, and mobility aids that are ready for ice instead of stored in a closet. [5]
- Put ice melt, sand, or cat litter inside the door that is actually used most often, not only in the garage.
- Check that the first step outside each used door has a handrail or stable grab point.
- Replace smooth-soled shoes with rubber-soled winter boots that the older adult can put on without a struggle.
- If a cane is used outdoors, add an ice-gripper cane tip before the first storm.
- Set a snow-clearing trigger: when snow is about 1 inch deep, someone else clears the path rather than waiting until it is packed down or icy.
- Move the doormat if it bunches, slides, freezes, or catches a cane tip.
The snow-clearing plan should include persuasion, not just a shovel. If your parent likes to “just do the front step,” decide now who calls, who comes over, and what the safer alternative is. Zone 3: Power outage, backup heat, and carbon monoxide
This is the zone to take slowly. During winter outages, people improvise: a generator is moved closer to the house, a gas oven is left open for warmth, a charcoal grill is dragged near a doorway, or a space heater is placed beside the chair because that is where the cold person is sitting. Those are not small mistakes.

CPSC warns that portable generators are linked to an average of about 100 U.S. carbon monoxide poisoning deaths each year. Its winter-storm guidance says to operate a portable generator at least 20 feet away from the house and away from windows, doors, and vents, and it calls for working carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. The generator note belongs on the door
If the home has a portable generator, do not leave the safety rule in someone’s memory. Write it down and tape it where the generator would be carried out:
Generator must run outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, vents, and attached garages. Never run it in the garage, basement, crawl space, porch, breezeway, or near an open window. [4]
That note may feel excessive until the power is out, the house is cold, the driveway is dark, and someone is trying to be helpful. The note is for that moment.
CO alarms: every level means every level
- Test carbon monoxide alarms before winter weather arrives.
- Confirm there is a working CO alarm on every level of the home.
- Confirm alarms are placed outside sleeping areas.
- Replace expired alarms according to the manufacturer’s date.
- Make sure the older adult can hear the alarm from the bedroom; if not, look for a model with a louder alert, strobe, bed shaker, or connected notification.

Never use these for heat
Do not use a gas oven, stovetop, charcoal grill, camp stove, or portable generator indoors for heat. Ready.gov and CPSC both warn against these kinds of improvised heating during winter outages because of carbon monoxide and fire risks. [4][6]
If the home loses heat and the indoor temperature is dropping, the safer plan may be relocation, a warming center, or a family pickup before roads worsen. That decision should be made while the car can still get out of the driveway.
The outage kit: build it for staying, leaving, and waiting
The Red Cross recommends both a 3-day Go-Kit and a 2-week Stay-at-Home Kit. Ready.gov’s winter-weather guidance uses at least 1 gallon of water per person per day as the water baseline. [6][7]

- 3-day Go-Kit: water, ready-to-eat food, flashlight, batteries, phone charger, copies of key documents, medication list, emergency contacts, cash, glasses, hearing-aid batteries, and essential medical supplies.
- 2-week Stay-at-Home Kit: water, food that does not require cooking, manual can opener, flashlight, batteries, radio, hygiene supplies, warm layers, blankets, pet supplies if needed, and backup supplies for daily care.
- Medication and medical supplies: aim for a 1-month backup when possible, including prescriptions, testing supplies, incontinence supplies, wound-care items, and device supplies.
- Cold-storage medicines: add a soft-sided cooler and a plan for safe storage if power is out.
- Electric-dependent devices: identify non-powered backups or a relocation plan for oxygen concentrators, powered beds, lift chairs, stair lifts, CPAP machines, refrigerated medicines, or battery-dependent communication devices.
Ohio Department of Aging’s winter-safety guidance specifically calls out senior-specific kit needs such as spare glasses, hearing-aid batteries, a soft-sided cooler for medicines that need cold storage, and non-powered backups for electric-dependent devices. [8]

Zone 4: Warning signs that are not checklist items
A home checklist can prevent a lot, but it cannot turn serious symptoms into a home project. Post the warning signs where a tired caregiver can see them quickly: on the refrigerator, by the landline if there is one, and in the notes app of the person most likely to drive over after work.

Possible hypothermia

Possible carbon monoxide poisoning
Leave the home and call 911 if a CO alarm sounds or if people develop symptoms that may include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, or confusion, especially when a generator, fuel-burning heater, fireplace, or gas appliance has been used. [4]
Chest pain or serious symptoms during or after shoveling
Treat chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or symptoms that feel like a heart problem as an emergency. The American Heart Association notes research by Barry Franklin showing that heart rate can exceed 85% of maximum within 2 minutes of snow shoveling, a reminder that shoveling is not a harmless chore for many people with heart risk.
